Zero-knowledge proving costs fall sharply as hardware acceleration matures

The cost of generating zero-knowledge proofs has fallen substantially over the past year as dedicated hardware and improved proving systems reached production use.
Benchmarks published by several teams show order-of-magnitude improvements for common circuit workloads compared with general-purpose servers, driven by parallelised polynomial arithmetic.
For rollups, the effect is shorter finality. Proving that once took long enough to require optimistic fallbacks can now complete inside a window that supports fast withdrawal guarantees.
Cheaper proving also widens the design space beyond scaling, into verifiable off-chain computation and privacy-preserving compliance checks that were previously priced out.
Centralisation is the counterweight. If competitive proving requires specialised hardware, the set of parties able to produce proofs narrows, which matters for liveness even when correctness remains verifiable by anyone.
Several networks are addressing this with proof markets that let independent operators bid for proving work, keeping the role contestable even as the hardware requirement rises.
